For many years, this river bend, which got its name because of its horseshoe shape, has become the perfect lookout spot to the emerald waters of the Colorado River.
The only way to experience this wonderful giant plateau to hike to it! And when you do, you will get to experience the great river and its raging rapids, which are about 1,000 feet below. To give you an idea of how it feels to be on the edge of Horseshoe Bend, imagine being on the top of a 99-storey building! Located within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the Bend is also just 5 miles downstream from Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam.

Although Horseshoe Bend may seem like the ultimate adventure destination, hiking to it is relatively easy. This famous Bend is located 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the small town of Page and just off the U.S. Route 89. When you reach the parking lot, you only need to hike half a mile to reach the recognizable cliff.
The trail to the cliff is often described as gentle, and is an ideal destination during an early morning and evening hike. It is safe enough that you can even bring children with you. The trail-head is situated just near a campground. Thus, it is not surprising that the trail can be very busy. The river itself can also have river runners and kayakers. Hiking the Horseshoe Bend trail-head not only includes steep declines and ascends, you will also encounter a sandy hill. This spot is believed to have been formed 200 million years, and was actually part of the biggest system of sand dunes in North America.
The entire hiking experience is like having an intimate date with nature. But expect your date to be quite loud, as the river rapids, which crash to ledges and boulders, often create thunderous noises. The first part of the hike is all about heading upstream and following a wide and well-marked path. After which, you will need to climb a stairway to the trail. After hiking for a mile, you will notice that the trail will ascend to an old road underneath a power line. Some visitors stop their journey at this point. However, take note that the actual Horseshoe Bend, is 0.2 miles further and higher up. Take note that there are no guardrails at the Horseshoe Bend overlook, so take extra care if you want to get near the edge.
Horseshoe Bend promises to take your breath away. One fascinating thing about it is the ever changing colors of the rocks depending on the time of the day. As the river flows, and the shadows move around the canyons, the rocks respond and exude blue and green colors.
